The pearly penile papules also known as hirsutoid papillomas are small, skin-colored bumps and appear in one or several rows around the gland penis and sometimes on the penile shaft.
It is a benign condition that is very common in young men. However, the PPP may bother the patient especially if the bumps are in large numbers or increased size.
The papules are normal sebaceous glands of the area and not sexually transmitted disease.
Some patients find PPP embarrassing and ask for treatment. The method we use to treat PPP is cauterization with the aid of Laser CO2. An anesthetic cream is used 45 minutes before the treatment and then the papules are cauterized without pain or discomfort for the patient.
A small scab is formed that falls off 7-10 days and the area becomes smooth.
If the papules are numerous or very large in size, a second or third session may be required.
Following the treatment, instructions are given for the application of an antibiotic cream and a healing cream. It is advisable to avoid sexual intercourse for 7-10 days so as not to injure the area. There is no pain following the treatment. Washing is as usual without rubbing the area. A follow-up is performed after 15 days. If there are any remaining papules, then the procedure is repeated.
